ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to investigate social environment and students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of family environment, school environment, peer group and mass media usage on the academic performance of public secondary school students in Eket. To achieve this purpose, four research questions and four research hypotheses were formulated to guide this study. The ex-post facto research design was adopted for the study and a population of 2301 students offering Government in five public secondary schools in Eket while the simple random sampling techniques was used. Social Environment Test and Government Achievement Test were used as the instrument of data collection. Project supervisor as well as other experts in the faculty of Education validates the instrument. Split-half method and Spearman Brown Prophecy formula was used to determine the reliability coefficient. The data collected was analyzed using Mean and Standard Deviation to analyze the research questions while the independent T-test statistical analysis was employed to test the research hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that there is a significant difference in students’ academic performance in Government in Eket L.G.A based on family environment, there is a significant difference in student’s academic performance in Government in public secondary schools based on school environment, there is a significant difference in academic performance in Government in public secondary schools based on peer group and there is a significant difference in academic performance in Government in public secondary schools based on mass media usage. The study concluded with some recommendations that parents should create a peaceful environment at home which will enable the students to be happy and ready to learn, and government should provide recreational facilities and technological know-how which will offer some level of exposure and practical learning environment to the students.
